Over 7 Million in East Africa on brink of starvation amid pandemic, violence and infestation

April 11, 2020

Over 7 million people across six East African countries are at the cusp of starvation as communities have faced existential threats from violence, flooding, the pandemic and locust infestation, the evangelical humanitarian organization World Vision has warned.

According to the charity, which operates in nearly 100 countries, thousands of children could face death or long-term health consequences if the international community does not respond quickly to East Africa's worsening crisis.

Debebe Dawit, program manager for World Vision’s humanitarian emergency affairs team, recently visited Ethiopia and saw firsthand the effects of poverty in the East African country. He said the situation is “severe.”

“The situation is very severe in East Africa, and particularly Ethiopia. Over 2 million people are in need of food assistance,” Dawit told The Christian Post in a Thursday interview. “Among conflict, COVID-19, flooding, locust infestation, all these are adding an additional burden to the community.”

UN agencies call for urgent action to avert famine risk in 20 ‘hunger hotspots’

April 1, 2021

Famine is already on the doorstep of millions of families in 20 countries, two UN agencies warned on Tuesday in a report that calls for urgent action to avert rising hunger due to factors such as conflict, climate extremes and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The partners said more than 34 million people worldwide are already facing emergency levels of acute hunger, meaning they are just a step away from starvation.

“The magnitude of suffering is alarming. It is incumbent upon all of us to act now and to act fast to save lives, safeguard livelihoods and prevent the worst situation”, said FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu.

“We are seeing a catastrophe unfold before our very eyes. Famine – driven by conflict, and fuelled by climate shocks and the COVID-19 hunger pandemic – is knocking on the door for millions of families.”

Middle East Quartet discusses return to 'meaningful negotiations'

March 24, 2021

The international Middle East Quartet made up of the European Union, the Russian Federation, the United States, and the United Nations discussed on Tuesday a "return to meaningful negotiations" for a solution to the Palestine-Israel conflict. A copy of the Quartet's statement was sent to MEMO.

"The discussion," he added, "included tangible steps to advance freedom, security, and prosperity for Palestinians and Israelis, which is important in its own right."

In it, the group's Strategic Communications and Public Information Officer, Murad Bakri, said that envoys of the four members had an online meeting to discuss such a return with the aim of reaching a two-state solution.

Pope Francis Calls For ‘New World Order’ For Post-Pandemic World

Pope Francis reportedly called for a 'new world order' for a post pandemic world in a book set to come out on Tuesday in Rome.

The head of the Catholic Church insists for the establishment of a new world order after the pandemic because things will never be the same after it. Breitbart tagged the Pope's call for the new world order as the Great Reset except that the pontiff's moves away from the culture of inclusiveness that works towards the building of a green economy with focus on financial speculation, fossil fuels, and military build-up.

Asked what urgencies he perceives because of the pandemic, the Pope remarked that inequalities and disruptions to the environment can no longer be "blithely" accepted because the "path to humanity's salvation" is focused on their "coexistence among peoples in harmony with Creation." He stressed that everything is interconnected and is likewise affected by the action of one person.

"By changing the lifestyles that drive millions of people, especially children, into the grip of hunger, we will be able to lead a more austere existence that would make a fair distribution of resources possible," the Pope said.

He pointed out that the pandemic is a wake up call for everyone to "remove social injustice and marginalization" by taking the trial that is the pandemic "as an opportunity" to "prepare for tomorrow under the banner of human fraternity" because there is no future for anyone without "an overall vision."

More Americans than ever identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ) according to a survey of sexuality, with one in six people under 23 saying they are something other than heterosexual.

The Gallup Poll released Wednesday, found that 5.6 percent of Americans classify themselves as LGBTQ – up from 4.5 percent in 2017.

Gallup surveyed 15,000 Americans above 18 years of age and found that of those who identified themselves as LGBTQ, 54.6 percent said they were bisexual, 24.5 percent said they were gay, and 11.7 percent said they were lesbians. Another 11.3 percent identified themselves as transgender while 3.3 percent said they preferred to use another term such as ‘queer’ or ‘same-gender loving’ to describe their sexual identity.

The pronounced generational differences raise questions about whether higher LGBTQ identification in younger than older Americans reflects a true shift in sexual orientation, or if it merely reflects a greater willingness of younger people to identify as LGBTQ,” Gallup said.

“To the extent it reflects older Americans not wanting to acknowledge an LGBTQ orientation, the Gallup estimates may underestimate the actual population prevalence of it.”

'Praying that God Protects Us': Killing Continues as Witnesses Recall Massacre of 800 at Church in Ethiopia

Bodies with gunshot wounds lay in the streets for days in Ethiopia’s holiest city. At night, residents listened in horror as hyenas fed on the corpses of people they knew. But they were forbidden from burying their dead by the invading Eritrean soldiers.

Those memories haunt a deacon at the country’s most sacred Ethiopian Orthodox church in Axum, where local faithful believe the ancient Ark of the Covenant is housed. The deacon, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he remains in Axum, said he helped count the bodies - or what was left after hyenas fed. He gathered victims’ identity cards and assisted with burials in mass graves.

He believes some 800 people were killed that weekend at the church and around the city, and that thousands in Axum have died. He recalled soldiers bursting into the church, cornering and dragging out worshippers and shooting at those who fled.

“I escaped by chance with a priest,” he said. “As we entered the street, we could hear gunfire all over.” They kept running, stumbling over the dead and wounded along with others trying to find places to hide.

Netanyahu has made it clear that folding on key elements of inspections or even sanctions relief at this stage would be unacceptable to Israel and its Arab partners. More than that, as Biden’s team looks to find ways to revive Obama’s Iran nuclear deal, the region continues to heat up.

Hezbollah continues to threaten Israel, and in turn Israeli leaders have warned Hezbollah no to try anything. Israel has also increased attacks against Iranian targets in Syria.

Biden’s attempt at rapprochement with Tehran is a gamble. With little hope of succeeding, a failed attempt could plunge the entire region into war. WATCH VIDEO:
Iranian commander threatens to 'destroy' US ships

An Iranian commander has said that the Islamic Republic has the ability to sink US warships. The comments indicate a continuation of hostile rhetoric toward the United States now that Joe Biden is president.

Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Gen. Rahim Noei-Aghdam said the military has the capability to destroy US Navy ships that are close to Iranian territory.

“If once the US presence in the international waters near Iran was considered as a threat to the country, today thanks to our deterrent power and surface-to-surface, surface-to-air, surface-to-coast, coast-to-coast, coast-to-sea and sea-to-sea missiles, we have the ability to destroy American ships,”

Photos Reveal Damage from Deadly Rocket Attack at US Base in Iraq

Monday night's attack caught U.S. personnel in their bunks and destroyed contractor living facilities.

February 16, 2021

The rockets that struck U.S. forces at a base in Erbil on Monday night destroyed a contractor living facility, killing one — U.S.-employed but not a citizen — and wounding four others, some American.

"You can see the mangle of bunks inside. Contractors here are shook up and sad," said Katie Bo Williams, posting on Twitter several photos of the damaged facilities.

Fourteen rockets fell on the capital of the Kurdish Regional Government in northern Iraq, in a rare attack on the usually tranquil city claimed by an Iranian-supported militia group called Saraya Awliya al-Dam.
A group called Saraya Awliya al-Dam took immediate responsibility, and claimed to have fired 24 rockets in the attack. The group is widely seen as a front for Iran-linked militia in Iraq, in particular Kataib Hezbollah, the group that killed multiple Americans in two attacks on U.S. bases in Iraq in 2019 and 2020

With all of the chaos gripping Israel concerning Covid-19 and the upcoming Israeli elections, it is once again Iran’s march to a nuclear weapon that is most daunting.

The Ayatollahs in Tehran are not wasting anytime now that the Biden administration appears to be a bad copy of the Obama years. Iran is refusing to sit down and negotiate and sees the finish line just ahead of it for the nuclear bomb.

While there is some discrepancy on timing, most observers and experts believe it will take the Iranian regime anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to reach breakout. Watch Video:

Iran Threatens to Take Out Tel Aviv if Israel Follows Through With New Military Plans
Israeli Lieutenant-General Aviv Kochavi, chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces said this analysis had caused him to draw up new plans against Iran, which he accused of operating through allied militias across the Middle East, including Lebanon and Syria, where Israel was already active in a campaign of air raids.
"In view of this fundamental analysis, I ordered the Israel Defense Forces to prepare a number of operational plans, in addition to what we have already, and we will develop them over the next year," Kohavi said. "It will be the government, of course, who decides on implementing them, but these plans have to be ready, they have to be on the table and they have to be documented."

These remarks resounded in Tehran, where Iranian Armed Forces spokesperson Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi dismissed them as "psychological warfare." He issued a stark warning in response.

"If even the slightest mistake is made, we will level Haifa and Tel Aviv in the shortest possible time," Shekarchi said in comments carried Wednesday by the semi-official Tasnim News Agency.
"I would like to emphasize that the policy I am pursuing is clear: we will not allow Iran to arm itself with nuclear weapons," the Israeli leader said. "I say this to enemies and friends alike, it is our top mission, to preserve the life of our country."
Doomsday Clock Close as Ever to Midnight in 2021 over COVID, Nukes, Climate Change

Leading experts have left the Doomsday Clock at its closest point to midnight ever in 2021, signaling a continued concern at the highest level yet toward existential threats to humanity.

Members of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists unveiled this year's deliberation on the symbolic Doomsday Clock at a virtual event Wednesday. The clock was set to 100 seconds, unchanged from the 2020 finding, which marked the latest the time has ever been pushed since the clock was devised in 1947.

The threat to humanity's survival is even higher today, the group's experts found, and many found the U.S. has played a unique role in endangering the world as we know it.

Rachel Bronson, president and CEO of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, pointed to COVID-19 as a sign that the world remained woefully ill-equipped to deal with potentially apocalyptic threats.

"The hands of the Doomsday Clock remain at 100 seconds to midnight, as close to midnight as ever," Bronson said in a statement sent to Newsweek.

"The lethal and fear-inspiring COVID-19 pandemic serves as a historic 'wake-up call,' a vivid illustration that national governments and international organizations are unprepared to manage the truly civilization-ending threats of nuclear weapons and climate change."

Iran Leaders Keep Focus on Biden As Israel Threatens Military Strike Over Nuclear Deal

Iran began violating the agreement after Trump withdrew and broke with it entirely after the American assassination of Major General Qassem Soleimani last year. Tehran has since expanded its stockpile of enriched uranium and increased enrichment to 20 percent, a short technical step from 90 percent weapons-grade uraniam.

Rouhani told a cabinet meeting Wednesday the world is waiting for Biden to make his move. "The whole world—except a few countries—is calling on the United States unanimously to return to its commitments under the JCPOA," Rouhani said, according to the state-run PressTV.

Rouhani also again claimed victory over Trump's "maximum pressure" campaign of sanctions, covert action, military posturing and diplomatic pressure, dismissing the former president as a "vicious criminal."

Meanwhile, conservatives in the U.S. and American allies in the Middle East—chief among them Israel—are mobilizing against the JCPOA. IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kohavi said Tuesday he had ordered his forces to draw up military options to deal with the threat from Iran.

"Iran can decide that it wants to advance to a bomb, either covertly or in a provocative way. In light of this basic analysis, I have ordered the IDF to prepare a number of operational plans, in addition to the existing ones. We are studying these plans and we will develop them over the next year," Kohavi said.

Prepare for Persecution: Domestic Terror Law, Big Tech, and Big Media May Target Christians

Dreher describes what may be coming to America as "soft totalitarianism."

"It's not going to have gulags, secret police – the thing the Soviets had. Rather, this is something that is going to be done mostly by Big Tech limiting access to the economy, keeping it so only those who conform with what the regime wants can participate in the economy," explained Dreher.

Social media speech censorship and Amazon's recent shutdown of servers for the popular conservative website Parler could provide a clue as to what may lie ahead.

"It's going to come from big business and Big Tech who will be using their freedom in our free-market society to marginalize and oppress 'deplorables,' which includes political conservatives and religious conservatives," Dreher insisted.

"We're going to see people designated as terrorists – people who have no interest in terrorism at all who do not support violence, but who simply question the way things are done in this country and they do so from the right," predicted Dreher. "I believe that Christians – conservative Christians – are going to be targeted too and there will be no discrimination between us peaceful conservative Christians and those who want violence."

Earthquake death toll at 73 as Indonesia struggles with string of disasters
Police and military officers have been deployed to crack down on looting in several parts of the region

January 17, 2021

At least 73 people have been killed after an earthquake struck Indonesia's West Sulawesi province on Friday, the disaster mitigation agency (BNPB) said on Sunday, the latest in a string of disasters to hit the Southeast Asian country.

More than 820 people were injured and over 27,800 left their homes after the 6.2 magnitude quake, BNPB spokesman said. Some sought refuge in the mountains, while others went to cramped evacuation centers, witnesses said.
Straddling the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia is regularly hit by earthquakes. In 2018, a devastating 6.2-magnitude quake and subsequent tsunami struck the city of Palu, in Sulawesi, killing thousands.

Just two weeks into the new year, the world's fourth-most populous country is battling several disasters. Floods in North Sulawesi and South Kalimantan province each have killed at least five this month, while landslides in West Java province have killed at least 29, authorities said.

Retired Lebanese general says 65,000 US troops at 54 military bases are under daily threat from Iranian strikes

JAN 17, 2021

Dozens of American bases located in various parts of the Middle East are at the forefront of the Iranian military and could be attacked. Retired Lebanese General Amin Mohamed Hoteit expressed this opinion in an interview with the Tasnim news agency. According to the general, 65,000 US troops stationed at 54 military bases are under daily threat from Iranian strikes.

Hoteit said. “Tehran has military capabilities and potential that could successfully use to accurately defeat any American target, despite the” excellent “American air defense systems,” the Lebanese brigadier general concluded.

The fact that Iran has managed to strike a base of this size (Ayn al-Assad – ed.) only shows that the Islamic Republic has its operational capabilities to carry out other similar attacks against other military bases,
France: Iran is acquiring a nuclear weapons capacity

French FM warns Trump’s ‘maximum pressure’ tactics only increased risk posed by Tehran; comments come after Iranian announcement of advancing research on uranium metal production

17 January 2021

France’s Foreign Minister Jean Yves Le Drian on Saturday said that Iran was in the process of acquiring a nuclear weapons capacity with its breaches of the 2015 nuclear agreement.

Speaking to the Journal du Dimanche newspaper, Le Drain accused the outgoing United States leadership of exacerbating the crisis with Iran and pushing Tehran to advance its nuclear program.

“This has to stop because Iran and – I say this clearly – is in the process of acquiring nuclear [weapons] capacity,” he warned.

“Tough discussions will be needed over ballistic proliferation and Iran’s destabilization of its neighbors in the region,” Le Drian said.

Tensions in the Middle East keep rising ahead of Joe Biden’s inauguration on Jan. 20th. After Israel hit deep into Syrian territory last Tuesday night, it is now Iran’s move in this high stakes game of chess.

To show Israel that it is not messing around and letting attacks on its bases in Syria to go unanswered, the regime in Tehran has decided to hand the Houthis in Yemen suicide drones.

Newsweek has reported that “imagery seen by Newsweek and confirmed by an expert who follows Iranian activities in the region indicate the presence of Iranian Shahed-136 loitering munitions, also called ‘suicide drones,’ deployed to the northern Yemeni province of Al-Jawf, WATCH VIDEO:

With the Biden administration taking over in a matter of days and its clear insistence that it do everything in its power to reenter the nuclear deal, sources in the IDF and the government claim that the IDF is preparing multiple options to deal with this development.

Given Israel’s new alliance with the Gulf Sunni states, its strategic depth has expanded. To hit Iran it simply has to fly North from the new joint UAE-Israel base near the Emirates. Without the need for refueling or even permission from the USA to fly over Iraq, a preemptive strike becomes far more feasible.

January 14, 2021

With what has become a major news story, the Israeli air bombardment on Iranian forces near Iraq has completely set back Iranian arms smuggling into Syria.

The AP is reporting that the intel for the strike came directly from the USA. Still, to launch an attack from Israel all the way to the Euphrates is not only amazing, but a dramatic escalation and message to the Iranians. With the incoming Biden administration replete with sinophiles, the Israeli government wanted to set back Iranian expansion in the region before inauguration day.

With the region on edge and Trump seemingly leaving office on January 20th, Israel may have to keep pounding away at Iranian position along the Syrian border with Iraq and if possible in Iraq itself in order to set back the Mullah’s advance enough that Jerusalem can weather the Biden administration’s plans for rapprochement with the Mahdi regime in Tehran.  60% rise in Christians killed worldwide in 2020: Open Doors report

January 14, 2021

“Extremists are emboldened by government weakened by COVID-19 restrictions, knowing that they can steal food and medical supplies from already embattled Christian communities around the world,” he said.

Violence by Islamists in Nigeria amounts to genocide, Curry said. Attacks have spilled over into neighboring countries. Across Africa, even countries with sizeable Christian majorities like Mozambique and Burkina Faso have suffered from Islamic persecution. It only takes a few extremists to commit violence against Christians.

Other persecution hotspots around the globe include China and India, Open Doors announced. In China, the Communist Party has cracked down on Christians by using surveillance technology. In the last year, it has integrated its social credit and video security system, enabling it to track its people and punish them for attending church.
In India, the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party has encouraged persecution of Christians by sanctioning Hindu extremism, Open Doors research found. The party has told its nation that only Hindus are truly Indian, Curry told The Christian Post. Political leaders have discouraged police from responding to attacks on Christians.

Al Qaeda has set up 'home base' in Iran, are 'partners in terrorism'

"You now have the world's largest state sponsor of terrorism in the world, the Islamic Republic of Iran, as the home base for Al Qaeda," Pompeo said in a speech at the National Press Club. "They are partners in terrorism, partners in hate."

"Iran decided to allow Al Qaeda to establish a new operational headquarters, on the condition that Al Qaeda operatives inside abide by the regime’s rules governing Al Qaeda’s stay inside the country," he said.

He said such an arrangement provides a terror threat in the region and elsewhere and could threaten the Abraham Accords – peace agreements between Israel and nearby Arab countries – by allowing Al Qaeda to blackmail them.

He said it could allow Al Qaeda leaders to increase influence in places like Syria and Somalia, launch attacks on European countries such as France and Germany, and could see a situation where Al Qaeda carries out attacks on Iran’s orders.

"You don’t have to be a former CIA director to see the Iran-Al Qaeda axis as a massive force for evil all over the world," he said.

"Prophet" Jeremiah Johnson gets threats after Trump prophesy apology; slams some in prophetic movement

January 11, 2020

Evangelical prophet Jeremiah Johnson said he’s now getting death threats from Christians after apologizing to his followers Thursday for “inaccurately prophesying” that President Donald Trump would win a second term.

Johnson, who also called out Christians for their idolatry of the outgoing president, revealed in a statement on Facebook Sunday that the attacks have shown him that “parts of the prophetic/charismatic movement are far SICKER than I could have ever dreamed of.”

“Over the last 72 hours, I have received multiple death threats and thousands upon thousands of emails from Christians saying the nastiest and most vulgar things I have ever heard toward my family and ministry. I have been labeled a coward, sellout, a traitor to the Holy Spirit, and cussed out at least 500 times.  Iran Starts 20% Uranium Enrichment, Seizes South Korean Ship

Iran began enriching uranium Monday to levels unseen since its 2015 nuclear deal with world powers and also seized a South Korean-flagged tanker near the crucial Strait of Hormuz, a double-barreled challenge to the West that further raised Mideast tensions.

Both decisions appeared aimed at increasing Tehran’s leverage in the waning days in office for President Donald Trump, whose unilateral withdrawal from the atomic accord in 2018 began a series of escalating incidents.

Increasing enrichment at its underground Fordo facility puts Tehran a technical step away from weapons-grade levels of 90%, while also pressuring President-elect Joe Biden to quickly negotiate. Iran’s seizure of the MT Hankuk Chemi comes as a South Korean diplomat was due to travel to the Islamic Republic to discuss the release of billions of dollars in Iranian assets now frozen in Seoul.
‘Naval BOMB’ prone to ‘sudden explosion’ found on hull of Iraqi tanker as Iran warns US may use false-flag attack to start war

2 Jan, 2021

Explosives experts were called in to defuse a naval mine found attached to the hull of an oil tanker as it departed an Iraqi port, prompting an evacuation of the ship’s crew amid simmering tension in the Gulf.

Iraqi authorities confirmed the discovery on Friday morning through the semi-official Security Media Cell Twitter account, saying a “foreign body” was spotted on the vessel as it entered international waters in the Persian Gulf on Thursday afternoon, some 28 nautical miles off Iraq’s coast.

It remains unclear who was behind the apparent mining attempt, with no party taking responsibility. Washington, however, has repeatedly blamed Iran for similar incidents in the past, including a series of mine attacks on tankers stationed in and around the Persian Gulf in the summer of 2019. Tehran has emphatically denied the allegations.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif claimed on Thursday that “intelligence from Iraq” suggested that the US was plotting to “fabricate a pretext for war,” around the time early reports emerged about the naval mine. The FM vowed that Iran would “openly and directly” defend its people.
Iran general warns US that it's ready to respond to military pressure

The remarks come as tensions remain high between Tehran and Washington

January 1, 2021

The top commander of Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard said Friday that his country was fully prepared to respond to any U.S. military pressure as tensions between Tehran and Washington remain high in the waning days of President Donald Trump’s administration.

Soleimani’s replacement, Brig. Gen. Esmail Ghaani, said at the ceremony that Iran was not afraid of confronting "powers," again without naming the U.S. He also warned that "freedom seekers" within the U.S. could retaliate for the attack that killed Soleimani, telling America that "inside your own home, there might be those who want to respond to the crime that you committed."

"By committing a craven act of terror against Gen Soleimani, the US violated int’l law & the UN Charter in a blatant violation of Iraqi sovereignty," said a post on the ministry's Twitter account. "The US’ lawlessness in full show. #Iran won’t rest until bringing those responsible to justice."

Already, America has conducted B-52 bomber flyovers and sent a nuclear submarine into the Persian Gulf over what Trump administration officials describe as the possibility of an Iranian attack on the anniversary of Soleimani's killing.

US Warns Iran

Iran is a country that has a government who sponsors terrorism worldwide. Terrorist organizations around the world rely on Iran for funding to murder people. And under the Trump administration, the US will have none of it. No deal with a terrorist regime who can’t be trusted. Yes to sanctions to pressure them to stop building a nuclear weapon. America has shown its strength against Iran. The Trump administration has set boundaries. Iran knows that Trump doesn’t play games.

Iran wants to destroy Israel. But they do not only want to wipe the Jewish state off the map, they want to destroy America as well. The entire Western World is a threat to their ideology. America is warning Iran – back down. They are threatening them that if they try to do anything, they will be attacked. As the anniversary of the assassination of top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani approaches on January 3, America is sending a message to Iran: Don’t attack. Don’t retaliate. Will Iran heed the warning? It would be very unwise to ignore the warning that the US sent.
Iran Vows Soleimani Revenge As First Anniversary of Assassination Looms

January 1, 2021

Iran is preparing to mark the anniversary as regime leaders continue to vow revenge against the U.S. Iranian forces responded to the strike in January with ballistic missile attacks on Iraqi military bases housing American troops, wounding more than 100. But Iranian officials have promised more retaliation.

Iraq has been the main battleground for the U.S.-Iranian conflict. Tehran-aligned militias have regularly targeted American interests there, and since November have resumed rocket attacks on the U.S. embassy in Baghdad and IED attacks on American convoys elsewhere.

This prompted Trump's warning of retaliation if any Americans are killed. The president posted photos of unfired rockets from the most recent attack on the U.S. embassy, warning: "Now we hear chatter of additional attacks against Americans in Iraq. Some friendly health advice to Iran: If one American is killed, I will hold Iran responsible. Think it over."

Iran has long held sway in war-torn Iraq, expanding its influence massively during the disastrous American occupation of the country and the sectarian civil war that followed. Masjedi claimed Iran does not want Iraq to be dragged into its conflict with the U.S., but Iranian and allied activities tell a different story. Pressure on the U.S. embassy has prompted the State Department to draw staffing levels there down amid security concerns.
